There's some genuine evidence behind the idea of apatosaur necks being weaponized. Not necessarily spikes, but their cervical vertebrae certainly stand out among sauropods.
Apatosaurine necks were extremely robust, and the bottom of the cervicals have extensions of bone that serve some purpose. Given the fact that sauropod necks are optimally built to free up weight, it says something that apatosaurines evolved a much more robust neck vertebrae than contemporaries, AND even more bone just jutting out at the bottom on top of that. It would make sense if they had spikes on their skin if they were indeed weaponized.
The 2015 paper on it has never been peer-reviewed however, and if apatosaurines had these spikes, they would not have been ossified since the only record of ossified 'armor' is in titanosaurs.
