People should read about the Free Soil movement. There were a bunch of people in the Norf who didn't like slavery because of economic competition, and there were independent family farmers moving west and clashing with Mr. Wade "Big Daddy" Armfield showing up somewhere in the middle of Missouri with hundreds of slaves and his private army of gunmen. It was a contest over which territories would enter the union as free or slave states, which would determine the balance of federal power. Then South lost that in 1860 because the Norf united behind Lincoln, and he had a platform of halting the expansion of slavery into the territories, which the slave ownin' bidnessmen down South would not tolerate. Like if we annexed Canada and were going to incorporate a bunch of gun-grabbing Canadian states into the union and each give them two senators a piece.
This was worse though because the slave industry was really lucrative. There were a lot of investments in these fine black creatures. It was like a latifundia system where there is a relatively small white oligarchy and a bunch of slaves and then a bunch of poor white knife grinders with not a lot to do, and who went on to become really aggressive Confederate cavalry raiders named Jerry.
