Greenstuff is stupid expensive for that kind of thing. I'd use clay or acrylic molding paste (pic related: the fiber paste looks like straw trampled into mud, medium looks like rocky dirt, coarse is more like gravel). You can also sculpt up with chunks of foam or strips of cork and balsa for stability and then cover them with one of the pastes for better texture and waterproofing.

I love the shit out of Battletech and it really isn't a be-all, do-all solution. Nor is it the kind of game for someone who wants something that feels more like Titanfall or Ghost in the Shell.
