>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

I miss AT-43, it had a cool aesthetic.

On another note, Wacrow just announced a few upcoming minis to expand on the new starter set, including giant mechs apparently. The evil faction looks pretty cool too, like this dude.

Hi, looking for cool objectives Mechanics to steal for my game.

In the previous thread I was suggested to check out Malifaux. But can someone elaborate a bit on it? I googled and no one really covers Objectives. I get there are Strategies and Schemes and that you can score max 8 points and that you cant score in the first round, but that all I was able to find. I don't want to look for the book and read the entire thing just to find out what the Objectives are.

Looking for games with dynamic and different ways of looking at Objectives. Preferably Not something that has a Campaign built in. Skirmish game. I already looked at these
>Killteam
>Silver Bayonet
>Rangers of wherever the fuck
>THE DOOMED
>Zona Alfa
>Infinity
>BLKOUT
>Majestic-12

The same unit, the same universe but 2 different games and 2 different art styles. Which do you prefer?
Anonymous No.96242872 [Report] >>96242946

Every match has a Strategy, which is the main objective that both players try to do to score points, and each player has Schemes, which are hidden objectives that each player picks before the match and can score at the end of the game and/or by revealing the objective when it's completed.
There's a consistent mechanic of having to do more of a thing to keep scoring it so it's not as simple as just doing a thing once and letting the points roll in
Some examples of strategies:
>five objective markers placed on the map, you can flip them to your team by interacting or killing a model nearby, you get a point at the end of the round if you control more markers than you've scored points from them
>five explosive tokens are spread among your units, you have to place them on the opponents side of the board and you score a point if there are more explosives down than you've scored points for them
>at the start of each turn a marker is dropped in a random spot along the middle of the board, units can take damage to move the marker, gain points based on how many are on the opponents side of the board
Some scheme examples:
>place 2+ markers near a single enemy model
>drop a marker in the enemy deployment zone
>have a model in contact with an isolated, pre-designated enemy model
These are all 3rd edition things though, and I think they've changed the general mechanics of them a lot for 4e.

I really should buy a few boxes of them, the designs are pretty good and I could sacrifice a few as the first minis for my son to paint. On a different note, some of the planned updates for version 3.5 of OPR sound quite interesting:

1. To Make Armies More Unique: A core piece of feedback was that many armies felt too similar to play.
2. To Balance "Cool Stuff": Over time, some armies received more unique mechanics, special weapon rules, and interesting hero auras than others. This update is a comprehensive overhaul designed to bring all armies to a similar standard, ensuring every faction has a comparable wealth of interesting and thematic tactical options.
3. To Define Strategic Identities: The rules are being distributed to give armies more defined playstyles. Factions are being pushed towards specific strategic roles—such as aggressive, defensive, or utility-focused and elite(Q3+ish), medium(Q4+ish) or low(Q5+ish)—based on the new rules they have access to, making army selection more meaningful.

As a refresher, the armies are getting refreshed in 7 ways
1. Faction Universal Rule found on most to all units in the army
2. Some Unit get an optional Combo rule with the Faction Universal
3. Army Specialty a rules that’s cool, different that the usual, and unique to the army
4. Mark/Debuff Ability for enemies
5. Special Weapon Rule Unique
6. Hero Aura Abilities Rework (5+ Hero Auras plus the basics like Banner(Fear), Caster, Repair)
7. Fully Reworking the spell list to match the changes, some of which will interact with the Faction Universal Rule

The proposed custom rule generator also sounds like it could be pretty fun.

I want to make a board for void 1.1 and the rule book says it's mostly a game about space colonization, hazardous planets being battled over by small forces trying to claim them and also inhabited planets with established populations living in cities.
The 'official' terrain was very 2000's gun metal hab blocks, science outposts and also 2000's style city scapes.

There is so many cool terrain pieces and models, but sincerely the hobby price markup is so ridiculous. This space ship would be like $50 if it was made for Buzz Light-year toys or some shit, but because it's made for "miniatures" they think they should change you $200. The worst part is that they 3D print it, so it only costs them like $10 in materials.

>Hi, looking for cool objectives Mechanics to steal for my game.
Zone Raiders has one where the secondary objectives add extra stuff to the table, including things like a nano-weapon monster spawner. It's definitely a campaign game with some stealable ideas.
7TV's got a whole bunch of scenario design options hidden in the supplements for 1e and 2e. I particularly like the one that originated in 7ombieTV where there are panicky civilians on the table, and certain models like police and charismatic leader-types an spend actions to get them to behave sensibly for a moment. Meanwhile the monsters can more loosely herd them around the table by making them panic, and their goal is to break up the groups of humans enough to eat the tasty civvies. The Maguffin mechanics that originated in Pulp and some of the funky stuff 7th Voyage does are also worth poking at.
SPECTRE 2/Asymmetric Warfare and Reality's Edge use civilians as a sort of hybrid terrain, resource, and objective system. They could be deep-cover operators, lookouts for cops or crooks, human shields, &c.. Gives you a bunch of ways to make more dynamic objectives like simultaneously trying to quietly evac an area while searching for a timed car bomb and not get your people murdered in an alley by an enemy deep-cover black-ops guy.
In Reality's Edge players can create and manipulate crowds and bystanders. There's also a secondary, digital battlefield overlaying the meatspace one. Capturing network nodes in meatspace gives your digital avatar characters a bunch of advantages and more mobility in cyberspace, and in turn Avatars can mess with things in cyberspace to make life easier for the rest of your team on the outside. Theoretically Reality's Edge is a campaign-based game. The way you hire up warbands means it's quite playable as one-offs, however. Mechanically it's a reskinned version of This is Not a Test with a bunch of cyberpunk tweaks.

>so it only costs them like $10 in materials.

For sure some of the prices are crazy. But a piece this complex and big can't be dirt cheap either. If I would print it myself to sell it, 150 at least.
Don't underestimate the amount of time and material needed for such a print. If I would want to print that thing, I would literally print for weeks and it would take at least 5 liters or resin. Assuming the very cheapest stuff for 15€/liter that's still 75€ in resin alone. If it's even slightly better stuff that's 100+ in resin alone.
Of course professional sellers have multiple printers running at the same time but they need to make some kind of profit in the end.

Heartbreaker:
>Our next book for 2e after Mars and Venus will be.. EARTH!
Literally every player:
>Go fuck yourself, where the fuck are Mercury, Titan, and Luna?
Heartbreaker
>Uh.. guess I'll die instead

Chronopia had been going on for a while at that point. It annoyed some of the Warzone crew, sure. Then they spread even thinner, leading to a long hiatus in Warzone proper before the first Earth book. People got more and more pissed because the higher-ups pushed back a bunch of planned releases for the other main factions to get the Tribes into production, pushed Chronicles back from bimonthly to quarterly to semi-annually, then basically went dark (even on the forums) other than a random FAQ and some odd rules changes that pissed all the tournament players off.
So when 3e came out and Imperial, Mishima, Cybertronic, half the Dark Symmetry, and the Brotherhood all got fucked over for something that was clearly a pet project for the devs.. yeah. Deleting the Cartel, 40-50% of the existing Doomtroopers along with many Corporate units, and removing about 90% of the weapon options in one fell swoop didn't help either. When you push personalizing your forces, converting and modeling as a main aspect of your business doing a hard pivot to streamlined tourneyfagging and making almost all models with weapon conversions illegal with no notice whatsoever is a real fuckin' bad idea. Especially when the nominal army size for everyone about tripled and the only minis that were shipping were the reculpts. The backlash was so bad Heartbreaker went incommunicado for a while.

Then the Pokemon crash hit

Ultimately I think their biggest mistake was insisting on dumping all the resculpted units on the market for Capitol and Bauhaus instead of trying to get out more books with a couple units and troopers for each army. The SKU bloat and self-inflicted dead stock on store shelves was a big part of what took them out.

Exactly. Every 4-5 hours you need to take a printed part out, clean the plate, start the next print. Also, as a professional business, they have to price in some potential fails that might occur during their prints.

1) Dude, buy the fucking Buzz Lightyear toys, man. It's cool. You can gapfill with miliput or superglue and plastic strip.
2) There's a reason almost all the budget manufacturers use lasercut MDF. It's fast. It's cheap. It's low-labor and switches between products with a few mouse clicks. It doesn't require dies and presses like cardboard, expensive molds and injection machines, or sucking up entire build plates for one piece.
3) Using 3DP or cheap cast resin/plastic/metal dressing pieces like the Maelstrom's Edge sprue to spruce up toys, papercraft, and MDF is the way. Even cutting cardboard strips to add some dimension to MDF makes it look way better.

It's always been super obvious which factions the writers played lol. Necrons were really severe about having double the options for upgrades so almost any unit could be given ambush or stealth or poisoned weapons or whatever you needed to tailor your list.

Anyway they need better vehicles. All of this stuff is nice but the optional vehicle rules are still pretty smelly, and still very much in the paywalled section.

Your seething actually made me visit their website, and they actually are cheaper than many sellers on etsy for the same prints. Of course, quality remains a question, but assuming its good, the prices they charge are also good in my book.
If you cant deal with the fact that a niche hobby product that has a niche target audience wont see a mainstream toy company release, then that is a /you/ issue Anon.
It does not make me a simp for that company to call their prices fair, nor does it make me a simp for Perry or WGA to call the prices for their miniatures fair. They are just that.
But feel free to look out for cheap plastic toys, because some gems can be found there too, but its not like some Disney toy designers plan their toys according to wargaming needs. And thats why "toys" within our tiny niche of the toy market always cost a little bit more. Such an unfair world, isn't it?

Trench Crusade is mostly for people who want to work on models as an art project but don't want it to be for "no reason" so they have a game to attach their project to. I've never seen them play it and it could have just as easily been a "shared art universe" with no competitive elements at all.

Is there a game that’s:
>Sci-fi
>Mini-agnostic
>Built around reaction mechanics, where stuff like shooting back when shot at or interrupting enemy movement through line of sight is core to the gameplay, not just a full-action cost like Overwatch in some systems?
I’m after something tactical for small-scale skirmishes with objectives, where reactions feel dynamic and central. I’ve heard Blkout might fit, but its pre-built setting and units don’t vibe with me. Any recommendations for games that hit these marks?

What's the best base sizes for multibasing oathmark undead skeleton archers at horde, and regiment sizes? Keep in mind these fit on 25mm and not 20mm so do I have to deviate from standard base sizes to fit them all on the multibases?
Anonymous No.96271604 [Report] >>96273862

For KoW only the footprint of the unit matters. If you place them on 25mm bases you simply have to be creative with fillers between minis to make the unit look 'full' and busy. If someone will shit in their pants over you not hitting the RAW quota of minis per unit then they are not worth playing against in the first place. As someone who tried to multibase his Basilean army according to KoW official guidelines, I can't stress enough how much NOT worth it it was.

It's weird that there are so few. Reactions feel like it would make for much more dynamic games, where there is not really any down time where you wait for your opponent to act.
Plus, it feels a lot closer to the way combat would work.
Is there a reason why most games seems to want to steer clear away from it. Something as simple as... I don't know... considering shooting between characters equipped with guns as an opposite roll, unless the other decides to dodge instead, feels pretty obvious.
Damn I'm tempted to design a system of my own, built around that. Is there something I'm not seeing?

Greenstuff is stupid expensive for that kind of thing. I'd use clay or acrylic molding paste (pic related: the fiber paste looks like straw trampled into mud, medium looks like rocky dirt, coarse is more like gravel). You can also sculpt up with chunks of foam or strips of cork and balsa for stability and then cover them with one of the pastes for better texture and waterproofing.

Partly tradition: most games aren't like that because most games aren't like that.
Partly setting: it makes sense for modern or future skirmish games, but rather less so for rank and flank and the like. Which feeds into tradition above.
It's very likely to encourage turtling, which is probably realistic but pretty shit gameplay.
Every enemy potentially reacting to every move will massively slow the game down. The active player has to think about who can react, the reacting player has to look for reactions and carry them out. It's not just more stuff to do, but more switching gears and back-and-forth. Adding dudes will quickly bog the game down.
There's probably a lot of space for game design issues to hide in that sort of system too, with all the potential action/reaction combinations.
Anyway Xenotactics is basically what you want, and it's good, simple, and free.

Well you did ask for a SciFi game. If you're willing to break this boundary we can add Crossfire, Fireball Forward, Disposable Heroes and probably any Fivecore too.

But yeah please fell free to write and share your own: wargaming started as a simulation needing an umpire for live resolutions; we dodged the umpire requirement thanks to IGOUGO but it's been decades of innovations in the TTG industry and we didn't reap these rewards to the fullest. There's plenty of room nowaday for umpire-less WEGO designs.

NTA, but the only difference is colour, price and volume. The AK Dark Earth Texture has pigment in, so you'd add it after painting the minis. Texture paste usually goes on white/grey/black/translucent, as it's an artist medium, and is usually available in bulk for cheaper than specific hobby brands. Do a comparison with art supply shops in your area.

>Any other info I should know about this kind of paste before using it?
It shrinks about 10% or so, so you may need to fill it with a nonshrinking material or just go back over it again with a second coat. It's usually white: since it's an acrylic medium it mixes freely with acrylic paints. I premix batches using high-pigment artists' paints (usually Burnt Umber, red and yellow ochre, or Payne's Grey) to tint the paste and then fillers like basing sand or flock to add some volume. It does get paler, but umbers and ochres are literally just dirt colors so they tend to look pretty decent if they show through when you're done painting. Pic related is from my first few tests. It's all thin coats of Medium pasted mixed with basing grit and (back row) black, payne's grey, and nothing; front row is all straight burnt umber. I have another pic somewhere of some filled-over puddle bases, but I don't know if I have good pics of the "fine" paste (which I prefer using now).

And the last shot. You can see the built-up look it gives the base. I've since moved to using hollow bases from WGA or the ultra-thin Renedra ones for this kind of beefing, not least because it reduces overspill on the edges. Which won't be a problem for you if you're multibasing. You could also use masking tape on the sides of the base to reduce overspill if you were so inclined.

But if you're willing to put in some effort to build your own warbands En Garde! is frigging fantastic. Especially if you throw in a few Robin Hood or Court Jester-style characters to buckle your swash even more. The Osprey website has a downloads section with some extra rules for including fantasy critters, light magic, and a QRS for the game. I really like the combat system (it involves shell games with attack and defense actions) and it flows really well. My only complaint is that it's a little light on campaign rules, which sounds like it probably won't be a problem for you, and not quite enough allowance for swinging on chandeliers for a game that's ostensibly a swashbuckler. I'd also recommend poking around for scenario ideas in other games, the ones in the book will eventually run a bit dry.

Anyway, I hope new K47 gives the Germans a Maus tank that uses those anti gravity repulsors to make a 188 ton tank actually practical.

I've toyed with it, but need to research how to make the poles in the 8th Army visually distinct from everyone else, besides adding a bear to one of my 25 pounder crews.

>>96289408
It's not, per canon, and the 8th Army switched off the tactical shorts uniform I use during the invasion of Italy, but the uniform I use is still appropriate to the Burma campaign against the Japanese in the late war and the fictional Middle East campaign against the Soviets that's ongoing in 1947.

My use of Caunter on mechs is ahistorical since it was out of use by 1943 and mechs weren't introduced until 1946, but I don't mind because it's striking.

New to wargames, and they're not particularly common in my country.

A friend of mine and I play on occasion, trying to explore boardgames and wargames lately.

We've played battle tech, both traditional and alphastrike. Traditional was fun, but a bit too slow and micromanagey for us, and removing rules felt a bit too disingenuous. We liked the customizability, and the ability to proxy things though. Will get back to alphastrike.

Played warhammer 10e (albeit on tabletop simulator) and it was fun, but the distance measuring thing gets pretty finicky, and line of sight gets annoying.

Alphastrike felt kinda the same as warhammer, but didn't feel as "polished" as either battletech or warhammer.

My friend played dreadfleet and says its super fun, but I've never seen it, and it's impossible to find here.

Any suggestions for some wargames we might enjoy?

Also, big ups to gook moot for reducing the post timer from 900 to 120 seconds. Long waits put me off 4chins a while ago

Mech combat stuff with some customization but less chunky than Battletech could be Heavy Gear or CAV depending on if you want more towards powered suits or walking tanks. The mecha monday general will have other suggestions, there's a bunch of options I'm not familiar with.

NTA but the fantasy critters and light magic system are in the rulebook itself, in their own section. You can also use the Ronin fantasy stuff with little issue.

Warmahordes. 1st and 2nd edition. I wish there was a trove of them and Iron Kingdoms. That used to be such a great game. 2e had better rules but I still liked 1e’s system where if you hit a critical system of a warjack you’d roll on a table to see how it would go apeshit.

I am surprised there isn't one for 2nd still, given books+cards can be found in places like ebay... but given that 3e's repository wiki was decommissioned and the new group still haven't published its' replacement, it shouldn't be surprising.
Kinda frustrating that most of the database stuff was either on old PP forums, that were perma-deleted, or on said wiki+blog site that got shut down.
