Here's some videos Sinix did a while ago. Not about spaceships in particular, but he's known for that kind of design. Personally, I think, that "genre" is more related to graphic design, and how to successfully make any simple shape appealing, by aligning lines and colors in harmony. A perfect square could be a cool ship with the right strip of color and details, like some number or a few lights or a clever simple shadow. That helps too when you need to use foreshortening and perspective. "Creative" weird designs sometimes do not help when you have to foreshorten the thing in a weird angle, no matter how you do it. A clean and clear design can help you with future perspective issues as well.
