I know about that pogrom. It’s hilarious how some people think it was a good idea to lose a formidable, educated demographic just because. Portugal could have been a safe haven for all Sephardic Jews at that time since many of the Spanish Jews were running to Portugal when they got expelled (I can even trace my family back to the Spanish Jewry). Shame. I’ve read the Portuguese weren’t as antisemitic as the Spanish tho, so "Marranos" could still operate in their fleets and in some business, but still.
