I've been flip flopping between native and three for the past few runs. Four and five were just too messy for me, haven't tried two. I do think three is 'balanced' in that it equalises the strength of each combatant enough, where a powerful warrior can still wipe a handful of weaker ones but isn't completely immune to them but it also doesn't devolve into monkeys with sticks killing god by sheer volume. It's okay for certain runs.

Serious reform in the middle of a spitroast war is unlikely to end well, but it might also be the push necessary for it to emerge. Compare it to WW2 USA's need for a greater workforce giving a boost to women's suffrage movements. Consider some sequence of events where the UC assassinates the Stone Golem, the Sheks launch an assault on the HN without her at the reigns, Flotsam/Cannibal/Fogmen pressure from the north spreads their forces thin, UC forces push them out of Bast, maybe the currently overzealous Phoenix dies and a more malleable one rises, so on. A faction offering strength through loosening their technophobia and misogyny could easily find some ears in such a situation, especially since the current HN is the most regressive it's ever been and it used to be quite a lot more temperate in the past.
