Heraldic or patriotic symbol of the faction issuing the armor is always good choice - animal, flower, landmark, stylized flag, home planet, etc.
For Dredd it's eagle on his chest and shoulder pad - which is very prominent in the comics and Stalone version (intentionally so, these are works of satire), but pretty plausible in Karl Urban version.
