Grace Hopper - an American woman - developed the first compiler in the 50s. She had a Ph.d in mathematics and mathematical physics, and was a professor before joining the Navy. By the end of her service, she was ranked as Rear Admiral. They called her "Grandma COBOL."

They even credited her with popularizing the term "debugging."
