necromancer as a protagonist class of good guys hasn't been "subversive" since diablo 2 which was two and a half decades ago.
in Diablo the excuse is that they're priests of a death god and using all the skeletons and shit to slaughter approximately one trillion flaming demons from hell; against ontological evil there's no such thing as a war crime and ethics are irrelevant since Hades says it's okay to cast a spell that explodes skeletons into bone shrapnel frag grenades to kill more demons faster.
In Guild Wars it's also normalized and one of the most common mage specialties, again it's not considered evil because the human god of death himself is also the god of necromancy and is one of the less asshole-ish gods around.

hell, even LOTR has a scene involving basically lawful good necromancy where an army of undead is ordered into battle to fulfill an ancient oath.
