Here's what a hot dish is supposed to look like. Golden cheese over crispy tater tots (they have to be tots, yes, nothing else gets crispy quite right), and beneath that a mixture of browned ground beef, green beans, and onion in condensed cream of mushroom soup.
You bake the tots uncovered first until they're crispy, then put the cheese on and bake it again until the cheese is golden.
