In the case of the Extella games, having played Extra helps to understand how Hakuno reached the position of Mooncell's governor, but I'd not say it's that necessary in order to enjoy the game. Extella Links story is minor compared to the first one, should be enjoyable enough still, but the biggest appeal of Links is the expanded roster of servants I'd say.
I like Samurai Remnant the most out of the recent Fate games. Pretty good story, more enjoyable gameplay and the scenery and historical background in SR is far more soulful and enriching than the Mooncell vaporware backdrop. Soundtrack is good on all entries.
