I'm glad you decided to knee jerk instead of read. Let me help you to do so this time:
>TRAVEL TEAMS and the PURSUIT OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS SUCCESS are one of the biggest problems in current parenting.

There's nothing wrong with kids playing in the local rec leagues or in their school teams, and generally speaking, high school and college athletes do better than the student body in general. A local home school co-op and the families around it can usually field a pair of baseball teams if need be, too.

The issue comes with kids spending every day between the ages of 11 and 20 trying to become the next 1st baseman for the Yankees. They're dropping the other sports that they would have played in the off season, constantly on the road, and accumulating so much movement specific damage that we've got high school seniors getting surgeries typically reserved for professional players. And its usually for nothing in the end because either the kid burns out and hates it, or some genetic freak takes his slot in the feeder leagues.

Also, I sincerely hope you take teaching your kids into your own hands instead of listening to the establishment that you otherwise hate when it tells you to trust them with your children. We spend more than ever to get less every year. Our educational achievements have decreased year on year since we've had a department of education. Jimmy can't read but he knows who to ask for Estrogen. Ask what kind of person benefits from this, and then ask what kind of person would choose to have their kid participate in it.

Read the methods from Charlotte Mason, and maybe E.D. Hirche's "Cultural Literacy" to get a great idea about how far our standards have fallen for reading in young kids.
