Tails was cool when he had two whole games under his own name, without Sonic around at all, where he took care of villains and a whole rogues gallery he defeated single handedly.

Tails was cool in the OVA where he spent the first half racing alongside Sonic and fighting robots back to back, and the second half re-wiring the navigator to hack into Metal Sonic, and let's not forget that jet-propelled bodyboard he made just to have fun like the kid he is all while looking cool as heck. And when that old man was in danger, and Sonic didn't care, Tails took care of it all by himself.

Tails was cool when he spent a whole game racing Sonic, BEATING Sonic in those races, and then defeated Eggman and his missile in Station Square, and everyone cheered his name. All while building his own, superior plane, the Tornado II, when Sonic's Tornado wasn't powerful enough.

Tails was cool when he made that new Tornado into a full-blown mech to break Sonic out of Prison Island, guns blazing. Because when his best bro is in trouble, Tails is right there to help him out no-questions-asked, even if it means becoming a fugitive of the law as a wanted man. And then who was the one to figure out Eggman's location, and create the perfect solution to Eggman's master plan? Oh yeah, that's right. TAILS. Complete with his own custom replica of a mystical jewel with ultimate power, which is the very thing that saved Sonic's life.

It's Tails who tracked down Sonic when Eggman announced that he had a weapon he'd use to conquer the world in three days. Even in '06, Tails is independent and takes action by himself regardless of whether Sonic is there or not. All throughout the Advance series and Battle, even in Shadow's game, that was the status quo. Tails was constantly trying to prove himself, overcome his fears, be the hero he wants to be, and do what only he can do. Even in Sonic Rivals 2, where he even had to fight a possessed version of Sonic by himself, and win.
