I do actually think he has some interesting things to say, but the writers elected to let Makoto and Futaba drive the whole plot as soon as they're in the party with all of the other party members sort of just being there. Yusuke and Ann in particular are borderline accessory characters by the end which is why I ragged so bad on Yusuke's gameplay, it's all he has for 75% of his time as a party member.
