>are the 6.5x55mm clips pretty much interchangeable with other Mauser stripper clips
Somewhat; the Swedish 6.5x55mm clips work in Mauser rifles chambered in 7x57mm, but they are too wide to fit in the charger guide for 8x57mm clips. Conversely, the 8x57 clips won't seat in the Swede's charger guides and the clip will go into the magazine along with the cartridges. Easy way to tell them apart at a glance is that the 8x57mm clips have three lugs on each side of the clip, whereas all the others have two (or none, in the case of 7.65x53mm clips). Swedish clips also work very well in US rifles chambered for .30-'06, as well as SOME of the Mauser 98 rifles converted to .30-'06.

>tend to be narrower than those meant for 98s.
You have it backwards. The 6.5x55mm and 7x57mm clips are wider. It also depends as much on the caliber of the rifle as to which clip the rifle uses because many countries that adopted some variant of Mauser 98 had already adopted an earlier Mauser variant that used an older style of clip, and thus their new M98 was cut to use those same clips to simplify logistics. For instance: Argentine Model 1909 rifles still use the no-lug clip meant for the Model 1891 and aren't cut at all for a lugged clip.
