You must sincerely desire to put God first in your life. If deep down inside, you secretly still want to cling on to sinful addictions, He will know that your heart isn't fully open to Him. You must hate the sins and sincerely pray to God for help to get rid of them, and express an honest desire to surrender to His will and obey Him, trusting in Him.

"Let the wicked forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the Lord,
And He will have mercy on him;
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon."

In Luke 14:26, Jesus uses the phrase "hate not" in a metaphorical way to emphasize the degree of commitment and priority that discipleship requires. It doesn't mean literal hatred, but rather that one's love for Jesus must be so supreme that it surpasses all other earthly affections and loyalties, even those to family. This means putting Jesus first in all things, even when it conflicts with other relationships or personal desires
