I've always thought Dosu just needed some way to survive Konoha Crush, i.e.
>don't try to fight Gaara, who beat 5 Gates Lee
>find some way of defecting/getting some kind of Konoha protection on the day of the invasion, before it actually starts, that way he's not forced to actually fight on the side of Orochimaru's forces
As for being relevant afterwards, honestly he could just get the same kind of offscreen training that Shikamaru/Choji/Kiba got (also known as "as strong as they need to be" kek)
