There was a coup attempt but the dissolution of the USSR was very peaceful all things considered. It happened because many of the satellites didn't want to be to the Soviet union and were forced into it after WW2. Thank the Lithuanian chads (sparking the rest of the Baltics to flip the USSR the bird) for kicking it all off when they declared independence like all based countries do from their former oppressors.
