I always thought the lore could have been improved by doing what 28 years did - the zone is simply sealed off forever. Or at least for an extended period, like a few weeks. Hell, make it literally 28 days before the Knox Event destroys humanity. Let it simmer for a while instead of immediately exploding like it currently does. The radio stuff could be expanded to like three or four months if they really wanted, there would still be broadcasts trying to direct people to evac centers or spitting out propaganda.
Citizens outside wouldn't give a fuck after a while, turmoil calms with time and they can't do anything anyway. Utilities last longer, consistent military presence, outsiders coming in is interesting (journalists? wannabe survivalists who actually WANT to kill zombies?), possible 'escapes' when it'll all collapse soon outside anyway. Like the zone from Stalker or something, a nearly supernatural cordon that wacky characters start flocking to.
By a few weeks or months in, it's all bandits and warlords, basically Haiti with zombies, so the government comes in to really clean house and get people outside to stop rioting over the dumb Knox thing. It fails, containment breaks and then you can transition into the "It's in somalia and china and albuquerque, thanks for listening everybody, good luck and god bless" broadcasts that happen on day 7 or so currently. As-is, everything boils over almost immediately, like overnight. It breaks containment and then everybody on the planet is a zombie within a couple of hours.
I feel like it really needs extended at this point, maybe even entirely revised. And I hope they use Will Porter or Turbo or whoever the OG radio writer was and not Pat, his stuff is noticeably worse. This lore boar wants moar
