A lot of Sailor Moon manga fans (as in those who are like, exclusively fans of the manga and maybe musicals, not someone who enjoys the manga in addition to other SM stuff) seem to see the '90s anime as almost an insult to the manga's story. Like those who are all about Usamamo or whatever see Manga Usagi, and sometimes Rei and Minako, as being comparatively more dignified and so see the anime versions as a bunch of clowns

I think the manga art style is nice but I also think it's the kind of thing that'd be difficult to translate to animation completely accurately. Not only because of certain poses that are designed more to be viewed as a still drawing (think like images with super long flowing hair hanging in a way that implies it'd be in constant motion in animation), but also just because if you look at certain images Takeuchi drew herself that were then colored in anime style, you realize they'd actually look kinda janky as hell if they were a real anime and not a manga that can get away with being a bit looser.
