It's because you're trying to find people who aren't flaky normies who will bail on you to watch Netflix but aren't grotesque neckbeards either.
The ideal people to TTRPG with are lovable misfits who have social skills but still love nerd stuff and have more free time than average. My favorite gamers are all like this: a community college professor, a trust fund dude, a woman on disability who couldn't have kids, etc.
And then you realize how complicated it can be when you need to exclude certain people. A cool person might have a lame partner who invites themselves and ruins the game. I know I recently invited two people from work I liked to a one-shot and a third guy's feelings were hurt when the game came up at work. It's really overwhelming when the pendulum shifts and you go from NoGames to having to make a manageable group out of 8 people who want to play.
