So my intuition was right...

I have a display port to VGA adaptor that has 330mhz of bandwidth and can do any custom resolution I tried (up to the bandwidth my monitor can handle). I haven't used it in a long while so I won't be able to post any pics, but I managed to run it at for example 640x480@165Hz (the max refresh rate of this monitor), 1280x720@100Hz (with black bars) 1600x1200@75Hz (max resolution)
