He off'd himself as a "gift" to Lucian (knowing he'd follow in his footsteps). The real problem is that he got zero buildup before the event/manga releases so if you weren't a Crimson Troupe mega autist, it feels sudden. Though personally I found it superfluous that Tragodia physically haunts Phantom to represent his being unable to move on from his past when we already knew he's a megaschizo who couldn't do that. Thank you Hypergrpyh for not allowing anything to be subtle.
