Baywatch was a funny series in that it was one of those cultural touchstones, but actually didnt represent the generation it spawned into. Rather, it was more the last trumpet of the 80s youth echoing into the 90s.
Ive been rewatching a fairly old tv series lately, and it struck me how idyllic things seem looking back in time.
It made me ask myself, could we have still made such things if we knew how things were going to turn out.
I am happy to say the answer I came up with was "yes", because thats the superpower of being born into an age of peril. You have nothing to compare it to. Nothing seems too big to overcome, because you have no choice anyways.
Thats the human engine of youth, specifically young men. Its what drives the entire species. You have to learn fear and despair. You arent born with it. And until it infects you, you can imagine anything and act as though it were already true.
Its like nature's cocaine for animals that can think. If you dont feel any pain, you dont know its there and can push through just about anything, no matter how terrifying the odds.
