There is an obsession with politics but it comes from tourists who think that Japan is conservative wakanda. There's less stigmatization towards lgbt stuff because abrahamic religions don't influence the country like they do in the middle east and west.

The representation isn't perfect, but it wasn't outright censored or ridiculed like it was in the west. You had a lot of sincere stories related to same-sex and transexuality in 70s-90s japan which is why people talk about it. Mainstream stuff like Sailor Moon and Banana Fish had lesbian couples in it.
