Dragon Queat worked because it's like Japan's first big Famicom RPG. It established the genre with simplicity. While all Shonen battle manga can be summarised as "Beat the demon king" they all have other elements around them, Otr could have set up more mystery around Flygja, establish the motivation of the Ice king, or set up things they gotta collect. It's done none of those and is just boring. Hell the world is just a barren ice landscape unlike Red Hood.
