Most modders are good people and wouldn't share malware, be it about WoW private servers, Skyrim or whatever. But it doesn't hurt to be careful.
Even if your computer can't run a VM, just running the client as another unprivileged user blocks most bad things that pserver hosts could do without costing any performance. Only inconvenience is that you have to go through this popup every time you click the exe.
