1 has the same style of gameplay, it's just worse at it. The movement doesn't work properly and the weapons are poor at working with the movement.

Oh yes because an important part of the hero's journey is complaining about the whole thing for 90% of the game. That character issue should've been overcome 2 or 3 planets in so that we can see more of Ratchet's personality shine.

Linearity is fine if the art direction is good (it is) and if it suits the story, which it does in 3 because Ratchet is part of a taskforce to go in on a specific military operation. In 1 he's bumming around looking for someone and in 2 he's lost in a foreign galaxy so it works thematically to have more open levels there.
