I think it's about humility. Modern clergies probably try to appear closer to the people to distance themselves from the negatively perceived church of the middle ages and early modern age. I wouldn't wonder if it started with the second Vatican council. Tedesco would disagree.
Recently visited an Italian cathedral museum again which displayed a lot these attires. Some of the mitres, tiaras and capes were so overloaded with gemstones that they seemed too heavy to wear.
I especially miss the galeros and the cappellos, albeit you still casually see the latter in Italy sometimes. I think Benedict XVI even wore a red one once. When my mother was young and still living there almost every priest was wearing these.
