The combat is deliberate, you might not feel comfortable with it at first but its not "clunky"

if you cant enjoy dark souls 1 you wont enjoy souls at all. Its probably the easiest souls to get into. demons souls has easier bosses, harder levels, and less movesets for the player. dark souls 2 is for the actual souls fans and not the bandwaggoners who cheesed through 1. dark souls 3 is a caricature of what souls haters say is rollslop. Elden ring is peak if you like open worlds and already like the combat of souls, if you dont like open world and just see the combat as a means to an end you wont like it.
