Grav Anchor is a basic research, expensive building, but it allows for a home base and a grav ship nomad.
If you aren't in the scenario, you can absolutely do what you're saying. The scenario probably wouldn't be possible without some seriously beefy home defense because of the mechanids

The initial grav ship is limited to 500 tiles in a fairly large circle. I sorta make it work, but I'm getting mood debuffs from my layout, I lack a crafting room and I won't have space for any more pawns once I recruit this prisoner. Temporary bases you don't mind deconstructing can help to free up space
