Nah it was based on project sabre. China got their (then) go-to plane sorted in J-8II.

Pakistan saw project sabre, took a liking on it but wanted similar programme based on F-7PG as they were looking at immediate replacement of F-6 and eventual replacement of both F-7P and F-7PG

You could see F-7PG influence in JF-17 especially the double delta wing design and overall fuselage shape. Like J-8II, they redesign the air intake so they could mount an actual radar, a chinese copy of APG-66
