I dunno, I feel like they left just the exact amount of ambiguity as to how much is 'Darumi' and how much is 'Retsnom'
Doing We Are One makes it seem as if it's full uncanny valley surface imitation, with everybody playing 'their role' knowingly on purpose, but it also raises the legitimate question as to what makes somebody themselves, especially with How Darumi Felt beside it
Is it memories? If so, *shouldn't* something that has all of someone's memories and personality and even identity be 'them'? When Darumi says the revived are effectively the originals, and making them new bodies was simply faster than using the corpses, is she bullshitting or genuine? Would you have actually felt better about it or felt like it was more genuine if it she did use their original bodies? They even leave it up in the air whether it was actually Darumi, trusting Takumi's decision to see her as a monster and kill her, or Retsnom, doing exactly what they read about and wanting to die once it realized the truth of what it was, who really died at the end of How Darumi Felt.
It could've been either. Or both. You can't really know, because you can never truly know what another person feels and thinks. Not without being them.
Sorry I just like the route and yapping. But you know, regardless of whether or not her smile is protected, she gets a happy ending and protected smile in Killing Game anyway so it's okay
