On the other hand, Beeny is monstrously obsessed with America, it’s the throughline of his character throughout the book. It’s up to you to decide how much of that comes from mental illness and how much of it is a deeply unpleasant possessiveness. He refuses to tell America his true feelings until it is too late, then flees from her at the earliest possible opportunity (leaving behind what comes across to me at least as a pretty selfish note saying goodbye) but still obsessing over her to an unhealthy degree. He refuses to form normal attachments to anyone, with the closest thing he has to companionship coming from a servant android and prostitutes who can’t reject him. He justifies himself that this comes down to the purity of his love for America, but should we believe him? America even tells him shortly before things come to a head that “he’s a really nice guy… but you’re such a jerk”. She doesn’t realise how right she is until it’s much too late.
