i blame modern ranked modes for putting the fear of losing in people. In the olden days you'd be playing in server browsers with nothing carrying over between sessions. In the arcade, or with your brother, not thinking about stats at all but just playing for the fun of it.
If you think about it, obsessing over rank to the detriment of your actual gameplay is making the classic mistake of confusing the map for the territory.
