They can sometimes bond quickly and deeply. It's not unrealistic. For soldiers in a war, that's called brotherhood. You naturally empathize with strangers who have been through what you've been. For people in a life-or-death situation, where any day could be their last, something similar happens. Never mind that we're talking about (mostly) young, attractive people at the peak of their fitness. Again, wanting to experience life to the fullest when you're on borrowed time is very realistic.
