you know whats funny. i was talking with some douche yesterday and jap shit got brought up. i told him I only read very little and then I soon realised they all had one thing in common: they didnt encompass jap culture/society. Dragonball, fullmetal alchemist, HunterxHunter, OPM, pre-Wanko one piece, etc. so while a story needs to be engaging, its also doen to preference.
One of those odd inbetweens was Blue Exorcist, which, yes its another exorcist comic, started in yes a school setting, (and yes another sibling rivalry plot) its character and plot progression was not totally aids ridden and actually kinda evocative at parts. I wouldnt call it a 7/10 but it made me think sometimes you can have genre/trope biases that actively hinder you from trying something new right out the gate. I want to be fair and give new creators a chance but there are just some things that gall me so hard I can barely stomach looking at them like isekai, romance, slice of life, (certain new fantasy genre)
