I've been looking into trying to adapt the Pendragon RPG into an AC-style jet fighter pilot RPG. Not just because of Zero, I promise, but because I think many of its systems map quite well to the type of stuff I imagine you'd do and need represented in a fighter pilot game.

>Players, usually knights, have NPC squires that can do things both in and outside combat ---> your wingman/men
>Combat is handled smoothly on two different scales; strategic (battles between armies and companies) and tactical (fights between squads and individuals)
>Fights are not necessarily to the death; a knight is worth more alive as he can be ransomed
>Beliefs and passions of individual knights are of great importance, they can and will affect their actions, positively and negatively
>Themes of loyalty and service, of ideals and glory
>Much focus on the keeping of one's estate and family
I think that attempting to represent modern jet combat in a pen-and-paper game will likely either result in something that is too cumbersome and complex to be fun, or too simple to properly sell you on the ace combat fantasy, especially if you play it very combat-heavy. Therefore, more focus should be put on the people and the narrative, and the lives of the pilots when on the ground, to bring the ace combat feel, and dogfights should be few but long, intense and impactful
