Motherfucker, literally EVERY OTHER TIME they explain Pa Kent's death, it works better than this. This scene doesn't work for the whole "you can't save everyone, Clark" idea because in this moment he CAN save his dad, easily, without raising an eyebrow. When they have had his father die in stories to give him the idea that he can't save him, it's through natural sickness, something that he actively CAN'T stop.
