Nintendo let you use a Gamecube controller for most games and sold its own Pro controller for the Wii that was just a standard dual analog controller. These worked with almost every game on the system and better than the standard Wii remotes.
When you literally can't play games on the console without the headset, that is an inescapable gimmick.
