because masterchief was and probably still is to xbox execs, their mascot character. like sonic is to sega or mario is to nintendo. inside xbox one x and whatnot you'll find these master chief easter eggs even.
halo was the launch title that sold millions of xboxes and xbox 360s for microsoft after all. and valuable enough that they'd let bungie go independent in exchange for giving them the franchise.
halo has been dead for so long, and xbox doesn't even know what its identity is anymore, that they should just take 343/halo studios behind the shed and put it out of its misery already though.
