The lads who would speak to me were always weird looking (or weird acting). One guy was from Hungary and he smoked a pipe, dressed in autism clothing. Not like weed in a pipe either but actual pipe tobacco in a wooden pipe, despite him being perhaps 18 years old.

He took a liking to me as he thought I was good at maths since I was the only one who bothered to answer questions during lectures / tutorials while everyone else sat there silent and afraid. In fairness I was good and did enjoy answering those questions.

I regret keeping these weirdos at arms length and worrying about what people would think about me if I was seen with them. It was all in my head too as one day that Hungarian lad introduced me to a girl who he shared psychology lectures with and this was a girl who I'd noticed in our maths lectures prior and had thought she was cute. Evidently other people, normal people, weren't concerned whether others looked or acted autistic. Because they're good people and I'm a cretin.
