If a guy is just earnestly kind and supportive, is it really that far fetched to think a girl would fall for him regardless of "social hierarchy" bs?
To pick a recent example off the top of my head, Momo and Okarun in Dandadan. Sure she's a popular gyaru and he's a shy otaku, but it doesn't feel forced for wish fulfillment. They're actual friends who enjoy each other's company and share interests and are supportive of each other. They're also both weirdos with flaws of their own despite the surface-level social niches they fall into. So when they do start feeling that way about each other, it just feels natural.
