I'm still in the camp that he shot it on purpose and thereby opened himself up.
Blowing up a relic to be able to destroy Samus or hopefully sending her to some hell dimension is worth it getting blasted for, and something he would be wanting intensely.
But this is going to be some 'who shot first' type deal unless they come out and say it someway given the exchange is so ambiguous.
Would be nice to at the very least read some Sylux logs detailing some of his plans and thoughts throughout the game.
