Even some of the earliest comics featured a capable knowledge of good panelling.
It is simply easier on the eyes to make the panels slightly askew from one another rather than fitting them into perfect boxes.
It's like how in photography you never want to photograph something head-on but instead slightly to the side of the composition, it just looks better
