NTA but I've always considered that to be pure horseshit and so blatantly incorrect that I'm amazed it's still spread around. I'd agree that Eva's core message, if simplified to the most absurd degree is "touch grass", but non-retarded it's more just "human connection is important, even if it hurts sometimes, we have to continue being human and living with one another", it's a deeply sympathetic and kind narrative presented harshly. It's doneso because Anno is a massive otaku and probably knows this pain firsthand.
