Recently, a Gquuuuuux Q&A was held with director Tsurumaki, writer Enokido, and Tomoyo Kurosawa (Machu VA). Some of the info is already out there.
>The idea for the series came about way back when Tsurumaki and Enokido were working on FLCL. Enokido asked Tsurumaki what he would do if he could remake the First Gundam, and Tsurumaki said he would make Chalia Bull a main character.
>The Earth arc (episode 9) was planned to have Machu meet a married couple who would teach her about love. (and also draw parallels to Amuro meeting Ramba Ral and Hamon in OG Gundam)
>They wanted to have either Matilda and Woody OR Kai and Miharu. If they had gone with the latter, Miharu would have been a high-ranking Zeon and an ally of Chalia.
>This idea was scrapped as Machu's parents are already married, so there was nothing it would add. So it was changed to her encounter with Lalah.
>The main focal point of the story for Tsurumaki and Enokido is Machu's growth as a person. But what would make someone like Machu, who is reckless and hates authority, grow and change? It was decided to use the other female characters to challenge Machu's worldview.
>Nyaan, Annqi, Shiiko, and Lalah are all women whom Machu would not encounter in her everyday life, and all potentially reflect the kind of person she could potentially become.
>Machu is intended to be an accurate representation of the youth, who often think impulsively. "If I don't do ___ now, everything will be ruined!"
>Kurosawa agrees, saying that Machu acts so irrationally that she feels like a completely different person in episode 1 than in episode 5.
>Char's "magical girl transformation" came about due to the director's desire to have him in his classic outfit instead of the standard uniform. They didn't want to have him manually change clothes, so a big influence on Tsurumaki was AKIRA and its usage of staircases. Hence, several scenes in Gqux prominently feature staircases.
