I get what you're saying, but I don't completely agree. The competitive fags have definitely ruined the image of these games, but campaign bros have always been the silent majority.
The ideal RTS game, in addition to being 2d, tile based and sprite based visually would be campaign focused and include a map/scenario editor.
I think Total Annilhilation is an anomaly here, and Supreme Commander was good despite a garbage campaign.
