No one came for the story of doom. They only came for the gameplay because back then there was basically no comparable gameplay.

Story as a hook only really became a thing once gameplay innovation plateaued in the 2010s and games had to resort to story to distinguish themselves from their competition instead. But before that happened, games were distinguishing themselves through gameplay hooks and gameplay technology.

if you look at the visual novel Mojika it shows you what is only possible with the medium of a game. the style of writing and the first person perspective a used very well. most are quick to call the writing and prose shit when it is seen outside the game, but as soon as you play it yourself you see why it's written that way.

basically wolf3d took the dungeon crawl and turned it into a real time action game and then doom advanced that into something that looked 3d

Then your task is to translate that into computer speak, and you will learn from that. The problem with huge projects is, if you are not experience with phrasing things for the computer, you will not even know where to begin describing it. Enginedevs tell me, is it worthwhile to start making the low-level changes to a modern engine like Unity or Godot in order to make it run on Windows 98 and hardware from that era in general?
I probably have the technical know-how to do it but I have a feeling it would require so much overhaul regarding threading and core usage and replacing the engines' own memory management / garbage collection mechanisms with something completely different.
I want to try and make a game that would fit on a CD and run on ancient hardware just as a technical hobby project, but am wondering what the starting point should be.
Of course I could use an actual open source engine from that era like id Tech or the Quake engine but that wouldn't really challenge me in the way I'd like.

the first time i've ever preferred godot editor to not take up the whole screen width. godot editor is a pain because you really want the central area be it 3d editor or script editor to be 16:9 just in itself, or at least 4:3, and then you also want decent width for the file browser, scene tree, and property inspector as well. so I think you really do need some kind of widescreen monitor like a 3440 x 1440. You just get cramped otherwise. I think a single 3440 x 1440 curved IPS or VA panel is the optimal dev setup. If you do lot of C++ coding then bonus if it can tilt sideways

godot depends on many third party libraries which won't build for that old platform, and it also requires opengl3+ shader based pipeline, whereas Windows98 was more opengl 1 or 2

what would be better would be making something with the usability and interface of godot / unity but that uses SDL 1 on win9x and SDL 2 on newer

So you'd make a godot editor clone in SDL + ImGUI or Nuklear or so. That way you can actually improve upon godot, under the hood it is a shit show, and has a few bad design decisions. It would probably be less work to make your own and you can improve on it too.

For example, godot uses gdscript which is almost python but not quite. you could just use full on cython as your own gdscript alternative.

godot script editor has good drag and drop integration with godot inspector and scene tree etc but it doesn't have the same keyboard shortcuts as vscode, you could make your SDLdot ImGUI editor work like VSCode does, etc

So a skill that fires off a lot of little projectiles each projectile would do a little damage, a long cast time big skill would do a lot of damage.

In gamedev (and many other fields), data encapsulation is exactly not what you want. Though you do want some kind of well-organized approach to changing the gamestate, the READING of the gamestate should be super-easy for all components. Because that just makes it most straight-forward to develop all the game rules that you need.
Consider enemy behavior: The enemy’s script can just read the player position and other properties of the world, and decide based on this information whether the enemy can currently see the player. Easy.
But if you try to HIDE this information on the program level, you will now need to do retarded things like make a message box for every NPC, where you send it messages concerning which players and which other NPCs it can see. You use up a lot more RAM, and you have the added complexity of having to run this outside system which notifies all entities all the time about visibility, even though the entity might not currently even care about what it can see; so it all costs a shitton of needless CPU; etc.

RTS games need to be readable. Having only 20-30 units types and each one only being visible from 8 directions in a handful of short animations is perfect for this.
Having 3d, floating, bulbous faggotry with hills, dynamic light, day/night systems, dynamic weather, is retarded. Now you have unit silhouettes that can turn 360 degrees with interpolating animations, who can tilt up and down on slopes, it's awful on the eye.
All of the best RTS games were tile based, they had low #s of frames and directions for units, they had defined color palettes.
Modern RTS games all look like Unity Template Sold My House First Game YouTuber slop.

Niche genres like RTS are suicide for indie devs because steam only promotes games based on what's popular with all gamers. When you make an RTS you're not just competing with older RTS games you are competing with gamble slop, co-op job sims, and Call of Duty. The audience really isn't there. I get what you're saying, but I don't completely agree. The competitive fags have definitely ruined the image of these games, but campaign bros have always been the silent majority.
The ideal RTS game, in addition to being 2d, tile based and sprite based visually would be campaign focused and include a map/scenario editor.
I think Total Annilhilation is an anomaly here, and Supreme Commander was good despite a garbage campaign.

Even if, let’s say, we find a Eastern European shack that does it for half the price, and then we cut the scope and the quality, so we land at a 100k budget. That’s more than I’m gonna shell out on my random ass project with 0 followers. But if a few players can appreciate that Hypercoven is at least decently enginedeved and has fun units and the readability given by 2d is kinda comfortable, then maybe one day there will be Hypercoven Remastered and we can finally have coherent sprites.

It’s over 50 units. Many of them are (by design) a bit more complex. It’s no problem to get 50 different axe-swinging humans from mixamo, but that’s entirely not what the game needs or can function on. For the tilesets I am even more uncertain. There is NOBODY out there selling anything remotely resembling the tilesets of those old games, not in perspective/style and definitely not in quality.
