Another day another game that was supposed to be a competitor to my unreleased title turned out to be small scope slop, SAD. Not fun, and in the end, not even close to competition. It's now just acting as an appetizer for my genre defining masterpiece.

Enginedevs tell me, is it worthwhile to start making the low-level changes to a modern engine like Unity or Godot in order to make it run on Windows 98 and hardware from that era in general?
I probably have the technical know-how to do it but I have a feeling it would require so much overhaul regarding threading and core usage and replacing the engines' own memory management / garbage collection mechanisms with something completely different.
I want to try and make a game that would fit on a CD and run on ancient hardware just as a technical hobby project, but am wondering what the starting point should be.
Of course I could use an actual open source engine from that era like id Tech or the Quake engine but that wouldn't really challenge me in the way I'd like.
the first time i've ever preferred godot editor to not take up the whole screen width. godot editor is a pain because you really want the central area be it 3d editor or script editor to be 16:9 just in itself, or at least 4:3, and then you also want decent width for the file browser, scene tree, and property inspector as well. so I think you really do need some kind of widescreen monitor like a 3440 x 1440. You just get cramped otherwise. I think a single 3440 x 1440 curved IPS or VA panel is the optimal dev setup. If you do lot of C++ coding then bonus if it can tilt sideways

So you'd make a godot editor clone in SDL + ImGUI or Nuklear or so. That way you can actually improve upon godot, under the hood it is a shit show, and has a few bad design decisions. It would probably be less work to make your own and you can improve on it too.
For example, godot uses gdscript which is almost python but not quite. you could just use full on cython as your own gdscript alternative.
godot script editor has good drag and drop integration with godot inspector and scene tree etc but it doesn't have the same keyboard shortcuts as vscode, you could make your SDLdot ImGUI editor work like VSCode does, etc

Niche genres like RTS are suicide for indie devs because steam only promotes games based on what's popular with all gamers.
